After losing her uncle, Dr. Irving Davis, from this insidious disease, Gift of Life founder Regina Rogers expanded the organization’s medical assistance in 2000 to include an annual region-wide prostate cancer screening effort that provides free PSA (prostate specific antigen) screenings and exams to Southeast Texas men unable to afford medical insurance or pay high deductibles.
The Men’s Health & Prostate Cancer Program, which is in its 20th year, has provided more than 10,500 free screenings and has extended the lives of 77 men who have been diagnosed and treated for prostate cancer.
Among American men, prostate cancer is the second most commonly diagnosed cancer and the second leading cause of cancer deaths. In 2019, it was estimated that 10,660 men in Texas would be diagnosed with the illness and nearly 1,900 Texas men would die from the disease.
“In 2012, at the age of 49, I was diagnosed with prostate cancer. I never really gave much thought to my symptoms being related to prostate cancer as I was simply too young for this disease, or so I thought. Fortunately, a friend urged me to have a PSA (protein-specific antigen screening test) with a urologist, which truly saved my life, because my prostate cancer had metastasized and required surgery and treatment. I truly believe God used cancer and its treatment to get my attention and to prepare me to be a supporter of others he would place across my path facing the same diagnosis.
As the Executive Vice President of the Young Men’s Business League – one of the largest non-profit organizations of men in our region – I am uniquely positioned to empower others to ‘be a man & get checked!’ I am proud to serve as the Gift of Life Men’s Health Month Honorary Chair and encourage men to become better stewards of their health. I know first-hand that early detection can save your life!
During June, the organization, along with local medical providers, conducts screenings for medically underserved men at strategic sites in Beaumont, Port Arthur and Orange. A range of free medical services are made available, including prostate-specific antigen (PSA) blood tests, blood glucose and blood pressure testing, HIV and Hepatitis C screenings, Cholesterol level readings and consultations with medical professionals to discuss the significance of screening and test results.
Statistics reflect that the five-year survival rate for men whose localized prostate cancer is diagnosed early is nearly 100 percent.
Gift of Life clients receive support every step of the way, from diagnosis through treatment and recovery. The organization
provides critical support through its Men Against Cancer Prostate Cancer Support Group for
prostate cancer patients, survivors, caregivers, family and friends.
